Day 5 - The Heatwave Continues

Early on this morning, well about 9.30am as it's all relative while you are on holiday, Anna and I headed along to the S-Market supermarket to get a few things as we could see it was going to be very, very warm today. It was interesting to see that the main road from where the gravel road from our cottage joins it, towards the supermarket had been resurfaced for a distance of around 4km overnight - we saw the workmen (and women) there last night about 9pm. These guys must have been working fast, as it was all beautifully finished off this morning!

Once back home with the supplies, we sat in the garden for the rest of the morning, just relaxing. Gradually we were joined by Keith once he had finished off his breakfast and later by Sandy who like a typical 16 year old, doesn't like seeing the light before midday!
In the afternoon it was great simply to enjoy the sauna and the ever warming lake. It was fantastic to swim in today and I swam quite far out for the first time - around 150m out at least from the jetty, where the water was actually warmer still. Sandy, Olivia and Keith obviously enjoyed the conditions too as they spent a long time in the water. This evening we checked the temperature and it has risen 4C since we arrived on Monday to sit now at 24C, which means it's really nice to dive into.
Anna, Olga and I also took the boat out for the first time, having had to make some repairs to it first. There's a plug type seal on the bottom, which seems smaller than it has been in previous years, and I wasn't convinced it would stop water seeping into the boat. Not wanting particularly to be sinking in the middle of the lake, I wrapped some plastic tightly around the plug then made sure it sealed the plughole when I jammed it in place. And it worked fine!

This evening we checked the temperature outside as we have been convinced many times over the years here in Finland that the hottest time of the day in July is often between 5 and 6 pm. Sure enough, the thermometer confirmed this, with a reading of 29.1C in the shade which is the highest we've seen this week so far. There is a chance of some thunder and lightning tomorrow, but then it is to be 30C on Sunday, followed by several days of 28 - 30C after that. Quite amazing weather!

Meanwhile, Keith and I are settling down on the sofa to follow the speedway this evening as Edinburgh face Ipswich at home!

Day 14 - Hot, Sunny, Perfect!

Every year we have been coming to Finland in the summer, I always pray for glorious weather. Sometimes we've been lucky; I'll never...
