Day 4 - Sunny and hot

Right from the word go today, it was hot. I woke up around 8 and as I sipped my coffee in the garden I could see we were in for a great day. And so it has proved. The Finnish main news website ran with a story last night about how scorching weather is heading our way for the next 10 days or so and today it seems it's already arrived!
We headed in to Jyväskylä for lunch today and there the temperature was 28C both on the car thermometer and on a display billboard thermometer so it's safe to assume it was that.
After lunch we returned here to the house and got the sauna heated as the temperature stayed high all afternoon. This is shaping up to be similar to the years of 2010 and 2011 when we had unbelievable temperatures the whole time we were on holiday here. For a country so far north, the idea of 30C days is certainly unusual, but that's what we are looking at in the days ahead.
Keith has been on remarkably good form, swimming and saunaing non stop and enjoying the sun for an hour or two each morning. He really does enjoy sitting in the sauna these days.
As for the lake itself, the water today is very noticeably warmer. The temperature of the water was 21C the day we arrived on Monday, which was fine for swimming but you were certainly feeling a bit chilly if you stayed in long. Compare that with a sea temperature currently in Scotland of around 11C and it puts it into perspective.
Yet today, the temperature of the water showed it was 23C. So swimming was much more comfortable even than yesterday. We sat for hours just enjoying the wonderful heat. Now, as I write, it's 8.40pm and we are still down by the jetty as the sun loses its strength.

Every year we have been coming to Finland in the summer, I always pray for glorious weather. Sometimes we've been lucky; I'll never...
